What to Expect From Your In-Home Newborn Session with Emma Craven Photography

There’s a version of newborn photography that feels rushed, overly posed, and a little stressful.

This is not that.

Your in-home newborn session is meant to feel like a deep breath. A quiet morning. A pause in the blur of brand new motherhood.

Before your session, I want you to know exactly what to expect; not just logistically, but emotionally too.

First, I’ll Arrive With Margin (Because Life With a Newborn Is Unpredictable)

If your session is scheduled for 10:00, I’ll plan to arrive around 10:05.

Not because I’m late, but because I understand this season.

Getting yourself ready while caring for a newborn (and maybe other little ones) is no small task. There’s feeding, changing, outfit changes, and moments where everything just….takes longer.

There is no pressure to have everything perfectly in place the second I walk through your door.

You don’t need to rush for me.

Then, We’re Going to Ease Into It

When I arrive, we’re not jumping straight into photos.

We’ll chat.

I’ll take a look around your home.

We’ll find the best light together.

This session isn’t about performing, it’s about settling in.

Sometimes the most meaningful images come from the in-between moments, when you’re just holding your baby and talking like you normally would.

Your Baby Leads the Entire Session

This is the most important expectation of all:

We are on baby time.

If your baby is hungry, you feed them.

If they need to be changed, we pause.

If they need to be held, rocked, or snuggled...we do it!!

There is no schedule we’re trying to force.

If you’re planning to bottle feed at any point, having a bottle or two ready ahead of time can be helpful, but only if that’s already part of your rhythm. Nothing about this session should feel unnatural to you.

You Don’t Need a “Perfect” Baby

Babies cry.

They wiggle.

They need comfort.

None of that takes away from your photos, it adds to them.

Some of the most meaningful images come from:

You soothing your baby

A gentle hand on their back

The way they settle into you

This isn’t about capturing a perfectly sleepy baby for two hours straight.

It’s about documenting what these days actually feel like.

You Don’t Need a Perfect Home Either

Let me say this clearly:

Your home does not need to look like a magazine.

I am always looking for:

Light

Connection

Emotion

Not perfection.

We may move a few things around. Open blinds. Clear a small space.

That’s it.

The beauty is already there because you’re there.

You Only Need to Do a Few Things Well

When it comes to your role during the session, it’s simple:

Hold your baby.

Stay close.

Love on them.

That’s it.

You don’t need to worry about:

Where to look

What to do with your hands

Whether the moment is “good enough”

I’ll guide you gently when needed, but most of the time, I’m just preserving what’s already happening.

Siblings Are Always Welcome (Exactly As They Are)

If you have older children (or pets), they don’t need to sit still or behave perfectly.

They can:

  • Come in and out of the session
  • Snuggle when they feel like it
  • Take breaks when they need to

We’ll follow their energy, just like we follow your baby’s.

There is no pressure for them to perform.

This Is a Space Where You’re Allowed to Slow Down

So much of early motherhood can feel like a blur.

This session is your permission to pause.

To sit on the bed with your baby.

To breathe them in.

To notice the tiny details you don’t want to forget.

You don’t need to rush through this.

A Final Note

You don’t need to have it all together.

You don’t need to feel fully rested.

You don’t need to wait until things feel easier.

This season, exactly as it is right now, is worth documenting.

Messy. Tender. Beautiful. Real.

And I’ll be there to capture it gently, without pressure, exactly as it unfolds.
