Let’s Talk About It

Ah, the wedding budget. You’ve got the big-ticket items covered — venue, dress, catering, cake — and then you remember there’s this thing called “tipping etiquette.” Suddenly, you’re wondering if you’re supposed to hand your photographer a little envelope along with your hairstylist and DJ, or if that’s just for certain vendors.

First, take a deep breath. This is a common question, and the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all.

What’s the Norm Around Here?

Here in Western Pennsylvania, tipping your wedding photographer isn’t required and honestly, it’s not something I see every couple do. Unlike service staff who often rely on tips to supplement their income, most photographers (myself included) set their rates to reflect the full scope of the job — from shooting your day to editing into the wee hours with a cup of tea and questionable snacks.

That said, some couples do choose to tip as a way of saying, “Hey, you went above and beyond, and we’re extra grateful.”

What Past Brides Have Done

Over the years, I’ve seen all kinds of gestures:

  • Cash tips tucked in a sweet thank-you card.
  • Gift cards to local coffee shops or restaurants (yes, caffeine is a love language).
  • Personal gifts like loose leaf tea mugs, framed prints, or even a little goodie bag of snacks for editing days.
  • A heartfelt email or review (seriously — these mean the world).

The common thread? These gifts are always heartfelt and never expected.

When People Tend to Tip

  • If you feel your photographer went way above what was promised.
  • If there were last-minute changes and they rolled with it like a champ.
  • If you just plain loved having them as part of your day, and want to say thanks in an extra way.

And Now, the Important Part…

I absolutely do not expect a tip. Your experience with me will be the same whether you hand me an envelope, a cookie, or just a big hug at the end of the night. My job is to capture your day as beautifully as possible, not to count tips.

So, should you tip your wedding photographer?

Totally up to you. If you feel moved to, I’ll receive it with gratitude. If not, know that the biggest gift you can give me is your trust — and maybe letting me snag a bag of cookies before I leave :)
