You just had a baby!!! Yay! First of all, take a deep breath and know that you’re doing amazing, mama.

When it comes to your newborn session, I want you to feel safe, cozy, and completely at ease. These sessions are meant to capture your family’s first quiet moments together, not to feel like a formal photoshoot.

So, when you’re thinking about what to wear, start with one goal in mind: comfort.

Your body has been through so much, and the last thing you need is to be tugging at tight jeans or worrying about a stiff fabric while holding your baby. Instead, think soft, stretchy, breathable, and layer-able. The best outfits are the ones that let you snuggle in close and move freely.

Focus on Texture and Warmth

Since in-home sessions are all about creating a sense of warmth and connection, your outfits should reflect that. Natural textures (cotton, linen, knit, or gauze) photograph beautifully and add depth without feeling “busy.” These materials also move and drape softly, which translates into images that feel organic and timeless.

Think cozy, not fussy. Flowy dresses, oversized sweaters, cardigans, soft lounge sets, or linen pants are all great options. For dads or partners, a simple henley, knit sweater, or neutral tee paired with soft pants or chinos keeps things relaxed but still intentional.

Keep the Colors Neutral and Coordinated

Neutral tones are the secret ingredient for in-home sessions. Cream, oatmeal, taupe, soft gray, muted sage, or warm browns all blend beautifully with skin tones and home environments. These colors allow the focus to stay exactly where it should be, on your connection with your baby.

Try to coordinate rather than match. This means choosing colors and textures that complement each other rather than wearing identical outfits. Maybe you’re in a cream knit dress, your partner is in a soft tan sweater and khaki pants, and baby is wrapped in a neutral swaddle or muslin blanket. It feels cohesive without being overly coordinated.

Comfort Comes First

This might be the most important part: your outfit should feel good. You just had a baby. Your body is healing and adjusting, and you deserve to feel comfortable and confident. Avoid anything constricting or overly structured. Dresses with stretch, loose-fitting tops, or drawstring pants are your best friends right now.

And don’t forget layers! A cozy cardigan or a light robe is perfect for throwing on or off as the temperature shifts (or when those postpartum sweats kick in). Layers also photograph beautifully, adding movement and softness to your images.

How You Want Your Session to Feel

Your clothing helps set the tone for your session. If you want your photos to feel calm, safe, and intimate, choose pieces that reflect that energy, soft fabrics, neutral colors, and relaxed fits. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s presence. These photos are about connection, not coordinating collars.

So, give yourself permission to keep it simple. Cozy up with your baby, wear what feels like “home,” and let me handle the rest.
