If you’re considering professional hair and makeup for your wedding day, I highly recommend scheduling your trial on the same day as your engagement session. It’s a chance to look and feel your absolute best, and you get to see how your hair and makeup photograph ahead of your wedding. It’s a win-win.


Even if you don’t book a formal trial, consider getting your makeup done, trimming beards, or having a fresh blowout. These small touches can elevate your confidence and your final images.


Thoughtfully Coordinated, Never Overly Matched

For couples, the best rule is to coordinate, not match. You’re creating a cohesive look without being overly uniform.


  • Choose a color palette with complementary tones and vary the textures and shades.


  • Avoid wearing the same color top or both being in bold patterns.


  • Solid colors, soft prints, and earthy or muted tones often photograph beautifully, especially in our rural outdoor settings.


If one of you is wearing a patterned piece, keep the other outfit in a solid color that pulls from the pattern. This creates visual balance without clashing or looking too busy.

One of my favorite ways to elevate engagement session outfits is to incorporate meaningful heirlooms or accessories.

Consider wearing:


  • Jewelry passed down from family


  • A watch gifted by your fiancé


  • An item that ties to your story (like a jacket from your first date or legos that you spend your Saturdays putting together)


These details not only photograph beautifully but also make your session feel even more personal.


A Few Final Tips:

  • Skip logos and text. Clean, timeless clothing always photographs best.


  • Dress for movement. Flowy dresses, soft layers, and pieces you can comfortably walk and sit in will make the session feel more natural.


  • Clean, intentional shoes. Leather boots, classic heels, or neutral sneakers are great. Men should skip the “dad shoes” and ballcaps unless they’re meaningful to your story.
