A guide to choosing the right timing for your maternity photo session during pregnancy

This is one of the most common questions I get from moms looking to schedule maternity photos and the honest answer is:

It depends!

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all week that works for every mom, every body, and every pregnancy. But there are a few key factors that can help you land on the timing that feels right for you.

Because the goal isn’t just to “have a bump.”

It’s to feel like yourself in the middle of a season that can feel anything but predictable.

First Baby vs. Not Your First

If this is your first baby, your bump may take a little longer to fully show.

Many first-time moms feel their best for photos somewhere around: 28–34 weeks

Your belly is beautifully round, but you’re often still moving comfortably and feeling relatively like yourself.

If this is not your first baby, things tend to show up sooner and possibly move a little faster.

You may want to consider scheduling slightly earlier: 26–32 weeks

Every pregnancy is different, but second (and third, and fourth) babies don’t usually wait around to make their presence known.

If You’ve Delivered Early Before

This is a big one that often gets overlooked.

If you’ve had a history of early delivery, don’t push your session too late hoping for a “bigger bump.”

It’s always better to:

  • Schedule earlier
  • Have the photos done
  • And not feel rushed or risk missing the window entirely

There’s nothing worse than planning for photos at 36 weeks…and meeting your baby at 35.

How You Want Your Bump to Look

This is where personal preference really comes in.

Ask yourself:

Do you want a smaller, more subtle bump?

→ Schedule earlier

Do you love the look of a full, round, undeniable bump?

→ Schedule later

There’s no “better” option, just what feels most like you.

Some moms want that dramatic, end-of-pregnancy presence.

Others want to feel lighter, more mobile, and a little less physically stretched.

Both are beautiful. Truly.

How You’re Feeling (This Matters More Than You Think)

This is the piece I gently encourage moms to really consider.

Because yes, your bump will be bigger later…

…but you may also feel:

  • More swollen
  • More uncomfortable
  • More tired
  • Less like being in front of a camera

By the final weeks, even getting dressed can feel like a full event.

There’s a sweet spot where:

  • Your bump is visible
  • But you still have energy
  • You can move, breathe, and enjoy the experience

And that sweet spot often isn’t at the very end.

You deserve to feel good during your session, not just look back and be glad you did it.

Consider the Weather (Especially in Pennsylvania)

If your session is outdoors, timing isn’t just about your pregnancy, it’s also about the season.

Here in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, weather can shift quickly, so think about:

Spring: unpredictable, but soft and fresh

Summer: golden light, but heat + humidity (which can mean swelling)

Fall: ideal temps, dreamy colors, but books quickly

Winter: minimal, cozy, and often indoors

If you’re dreaming of a specific look (golden fields, fall leaves, soft spring blooms), that may influence when you schedule just as much as how far along you are.

So…When Should You Book?

Most of my clients land somewhere between:

28–34 weeks

But the right answer is a combination of:

  • Your pregnancy history
  • Your body
  • Your comfort level
  • Your vision for your photos
  • And the season you’re in (literally and figuratively)

A Final Thought

There’s no perfect week.

There’s only the week that feels right for you.

You don’t need the biggest bump.

You don’t need to wait until the very end.

You don’t need to push through discomfort just to check a box.

You just need a moment in time that reflects this season, honestly and beautifully.

And whenever that is, it will be enough.
